AND TEXTILE WORKSHOPS 2010

Weekend Workshops
1. 30th/31st January. Contemporary Tapestry.
£100 materials included. A workshop that will introduce
you to the versatility of contemporary tapestry. This
workshop is suitable for beginners and intermediate
students who wish to explore the creative potential
of woven tapestry.
2. 13th/14th February. Magical Threads.
£100 materials included. Experimenting with a variety
of traditional and non-traditional materials you will
discover the wide range of possibilities tapestry
offers for personal expression, form fine weaving
to 3d and textural surfaces. Experimenting with papers,
plastic, and unusual materials any thing is possible
with magical threads.
3. 27th/28th February. Record and Reflect
- Sketchbooks for textile artists.
£100. The common misconception is that a sketchbook
is full of drawings and that you have to be good at
drawing to get started. This weekend is designed to
introduce you to a range of sketchbooks approaches.
4. 6th/7th March. Piecing and Patching - Introduction
to patchwork techniques from around the world.
£100 + materials.
Every nationality has its own form of piecing and
patching fabrics; whither it is out of necessity or
cultural and historic traditions. Over the weekend
we will explore hand stitched patchwork techniques
from Korea, Japan, UK and America. Colour, pattern,
design and the play of light will all be explored
in this weekend workshop.
Summer School - 19th – 23rd
July. Tapestry in the 21st Century.
£275 - To be confirmed.
Fees include some materials and tea and coffee (please
bring a packed lunch). A weaving frame and bobbins
can be provided for your use. If you wish to keep
them, there will be a small charge of £15.
All workshops will be held in my studio at WASPS,
Studio 304, Patriothall, Stockbridge, Edinburgh. And
will run for 10am to 4.30pm.

Mark Andrew Powell has been a professional
craftsman for over 25 years, specialising in all forms
of metalwork. You will be working in his very well
equipped workshop allowing access to a wide range
of processes.

PAINTING WORKSHOPS – RONALD RYAN
Courses begin January 2010 for 12 weeks
1. Everything you ever wanted to know about
drawing and Painting but were afraid to ask.
Next course begins on Tues 12 of January 2010 and
runs every Tuesday between 6.30 - 8 30 pm for 12 weeks
Max class size 8 students. Course fee £150
2. Oil Painting 1. Next course Begins
on Tues 13th January 2010 and runs every Tuesday between
6.30-8.30pm for 12 weeks

3. Painting Old Masters. Painting
old masters is a course that will take you step by
step using 6 assignments through the processes involved
in creating a classical painting. The course concentrates
on the baroque style used by artists like Rembrandt,
Caravaggio, Velasquez and Titian. Max class size 8
students Course fee £520.
Next course begins 15th january 2010 sat 10.00am till
12.00am and runs for 18 weeks
Ronald Ryan was Born in Glasgow 1958, he moved to
Edinburgh to attend Edinburgh College of Art in 1977.
Ryan qualified from ECA with a BA (Hons) in stained
glass design and restoration in 1982. A cross disciplined
artist based in Edinburgh, his work has covered a
wide sweep of subject matter and style, from the Stained
Glass for the Sanctuary of the New Edinburgh Royal
Infirmary, to the atmospheric landscapes of his recent
collection of paintings. A noted portrait artist,
his portraits include the Scots sculptor Ronnie Rae
and the last portrait of Sax Shaw, painted for his
80th birthday.
